Effect of Vendor-Managed Inventory System on Performance of Retail Outlets in Kenya.

Performance of retail outlets is of paramount importance to the world economy as well as the Kenyan economy since it ensures availability of goods to the general public as and when it is needed therefore fulfilling time, place, and possession and form utility. However, recent performance of the sector has been unstable with a number of big retail outlets going out of business which threatens the sector’s contribution to Kenya’s GDP and employment. Previous studies which have linked inventory management practices to performance of the retail outlets have focused on retail outlets in towns and cities with little attention being given to the role of inventory management practices in retail outlets in Kenyas rural counties such as Migori County. The main objective of the present study was to establish the effect of inventory management practices on performance of retail outlets in Kenya with a specific objectives of the study were: to determine the effect of Vendor-Managed Inventory system on performance of retail outlets in Migori County. The study adapted a descriptive survey design. The target population of the study were the stores managers of 66 retail stores in Migori County. All the 66 retail store managers from the 66 retail stores in Migori County were selected. Questionnaires were used to collect data. The collected data were analyzed descriptively. Based on findings for the study objective, VMI, which showed that control activities have a positive significant effect on performance of retail outlets hence implying that holding all factors constant, a unit increase in control activities leads to a significant increase in performance of retail outlets, it is concluded that control activities is an important factor in increasing performance of retail outlets in the organizations.
Loan Portfolio Diversification and Liquidity Risk of Deposit-Taking Savings and Credit Co-operative Organizations.

SACCOs play a crucial role in providing financial services to the section of the population that is left out by banks and other financial institutions. SACCOs, especially deposit-taking ones face various challenges in their daily operations, including difficulties in balancing their liquidity. The aim of this paper was to determine the influence of loan portfolio diversification on liquidity risk of deposit-taking SACCOs in Kenya. It specifically sought to test the hypothesis: Loan portfolio diversification has no significant influence on liquidity risk of deposit-taking SACCOs in Kenya. The researcher made use of secondary data collected from audited financial statements of deposit-taking SACCOs submitted to SASRA. Collected data encompassed panel data spanning a period of five years from 2013 to 2017 across deposit-taking SACCOs. The data was analyzed using panel data analysis. Regression and correlation analysis were also conducted to test the existing relationship between the dependent and independent variables. It was found that loan portfolio diversification had a significant influence on the liquidity of deposit taking SACCOs in Kenya. We recommend that SACCO Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA) should review or formulate tight guidelines to be followed when SACCOs advance loans for personal use.
Effect of Inventory Management Practices on Supply Chain Performance of Cement Manufacturing Firms in Kenya.

Organizations have implemented inventory management practices because of the advantages gained from it and they considered a valuable asset to an organization as it helps in reducing operational costs, maximizes revenues gained and increases sales. At times organizations fail in managing its inventories which lead to reduced productivity, increase in production costs and resource wastages. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of inventory management practices on supply chain performance of cement manufacturing firms in Kenya. Cement firms are the major consumers of imported and local bulk materials that are very costly hence the need for proper management. The specific objectives were to establish the effect of economic order quantity and electronic inventory management on supply chain performance among cement manufacturing firms in Kenya. The theories of transactional cost, inventory cost and theory of constraints anchored the study. A descriptive research design was adopted by the study. The target population was 8 cement manufacturing firms as the unit of analysis while the respondents being unit of observation were 167 staff from procurement or supply chain departments and their equivalents from these firms. Using the Kothari formula, the sample size was 167 employees who were randomly selected using the stratified random sampling technique. The study collected primary data using questionnaires and secondary data using data collection sheet. Descriptive statistics were used in the analysis and obtain means and standard deviations. The study established that Economic Order Quantity and electronic inventory management were all practiced and they significantly affected supply chain performance of the cement manufacturing firms in Kenya. The study concludes that inventory management practices have significant effect on supply chain performance. The study recommends that procurement and supply chain managers of the cement manufacturing firms in Kenya ought to adopt modern state of the art technologies to support inventory planning and scheduling processes, they should increase the number of suppliers that they have partnered with for an improvement in supply chain performance, they should fully leverage the EOQ to minimize on ordering and holding costs thus enhancing supply chain performance and invest in modern technologies to support electronic inventory management thus enhancing supply chain performance.
